Let the Creative Genie Out of the Bottle

This is not a “how-to-get-you-kids-to-write” book. It’s about “having fun with writing.” Read on…

Encourage your kids to express themselves through writing. Don’t panic over the mechanics. Allow them to write like they talk, with some reservations of course.

When I was a child, writing occupied a good deal of my time. Children love to tell stories about themselves, make up fantasy happenings, and all other sorts of goodies.

During New York City winters, I was trapped inside my house as well as in my head, I had oodles of time to pull out those journals and write. There were no video games, no computers, no texting, and no #tiktokmademedoit. Imagine that! My creativity got to run rampant. My aunt would comment, “She’s always got a notebook and pencil attached to her hand.” I was a loner, an introspective kid. I fantasized a great deal. Sometimes I thought I was reincarnated from a poor English family from the 1600’s and I was taking notes for generations to come. One day my journals would be found in an antique store and sold for thousands of dollars. It was either that or I had to have been adopted. I’ve come to find out that neither fantasy was true. I’ve come to grips with the truth. I was a “Drama Queen.”

Next segment of “Crazy Writing” coming soon…

Prison of Doom

I wrote this book for students in grades 4-6.

Seventh-grader Jake Greer hates having a learning disability. He also hates his special education class, and he especially hates Ms. Wishner, a teacher who humiliates and mocks him for “being special.” Fortunately, Jake has a great pitching arm and two best friends who help him through the awkward classroom moments: Coco is beautiful and level-headed; Patrick is smart and loyal. It isn’t until a mean prank on Ms. Wishner goes wrong that Jake learns how to make the best of his talents and accepts that he really is special.

It turns out that my adult readers are identifying with Jake’s story. Many of us had undiagnosed learning issues in school and/or a mean teacher. Jake’s nemesis was Ms. Wishner. Who was yours?
